Laser technology has become a revolution in the cosmetology sector with the arrival of the advanced laser machine.

What is Laser Hair Removal Treatment exactly?

Laser hair removal treatment is a process of removing unwanted hair using a laser, which is an intense and pulsating beam of light. The process is done when a beam of light passes through the skin towards a single hair follicle. The future hair growth is also slowed down as the laser emits light with strong heat that damages the hair follicle.

Even if the laser treatment slows down the hair growth, it does not mean the hair will not grow at all but 80-90% of hair reduction will take place. It normally takes various hair removal treatments to get a long period without these unwanted hair growths. For this periodic maintenance treatment will be needed. Another two factors that influence the laser hair removal treatment is hair color and skin type of the person. Because the treatment is more effective for the people of light skin and dark hair as the laser beam focuses on the pigments of hair. By the advancement in technology, laser hair removal has become a better option for people with dark skin as well.

when first introduced in the late 1990’s, was limited to light skinned individuals with dark hair. Efficient laser hair removal was produced initially by Alexandrite and Diode lasers which is useful for Caucasians. Dark skinned individuals could not use these lasers for effective hair removal because early generation lasers were unable to distinguish between skin pigment and hair follicles, which led to the burning of those with darker skin. Today this has all changed. The advent of the new laser line, the Nd YAG has afforded excellent results for individuals with dark skin and dark hair especially for Indians. This centre employs Nd YAG laser for hair removal which is ideally suited for Indian skin compared to Diode laser and IPL intense light system (for details refer to FAQ link page).

Nd YAG laser uses homogeneous photothermolysis principle for removal of hair. Homogeneous photothermolysis is based on the fact that laser energy acts on a certain tissue volume homogeneously. Rapidly dividing cells with high cellular metabolism are the first to be affected by absorbed laser energy. The hair bulb cells in the anagen phase (period of active stable growth) have a high metabolic rate and are much more sensitive to heat. Surrounding tissue is preserved, while at the same time, hair follicles are irreversibly destroyed. Due to the very low absorption in melanin, competition between skin and hair pigment is less, which makes this method more suitable for darker skin types.

In normal circumstances hair production in each follicle occurs in a cyclic fashion, with three main phases –

  1. Anagen or growth phase which lasts between two to eight years.
  2. Catagen or transition phase which lasts between two to four weeks.
  3. Telogen or resting phase which lasts for two to four months.

During laser treatment only active growth phase black hair can be removed. It is advisable to have first three sittings at an interval of 4-6 weeks and next three sittings at an interval of 6-8 weeks period. Later the patient may need 2 or 3 sittings more at an interval of 6 to 8 months period to get maximum result. It is mandatory to find out the causes of hair growth such as Polycystic ovarian syndrome, Hypothyroidism, Congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Cushings syndrome, HAIR AN Syndrome (hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance, acanthosis nigrans), Idiopathic hirsutism, Medications: Phenytoin, Minoxidil, Cyclosporine, Diazoxide or Anabolic Steroids
